Egon MĂŒller 'Scharzhof' Riesling 2022
- TASTING NOTE: "Lively and subtle nose of ripe yellow apple, white peach and wild flowers. Juicy and elegant with a vibrant acidity that lights this up beautifully. A touch of perceptible grape sweetness at the front of the medium-bodied palate, but the long, wet stone finish is admirably dry. Spot on balance. Drink or hold." 92 Points - Stuart Piggott, JamesSuckling.com
- ABOUT THE WINE: "The "Scharzhof" is our entry-level Riesling, the gateway to our world. The Scharzhof is made from the grapes of our vineyards in Saarburg, Oberemmel and from the Wiltinger sites Braunfels and Kupp. Depending on the quality and quantity of the vintage, grapes from the Wiltinger braune Kupp site and even from the Scharzhofberg can also be added. Typical for the Scharzhof is its balance between sweetness, minerality and Saar-typical acidity. It can be drunk young with pleasure, but also has an amazingly enormous aging potential, which should not be misjudged. The Scharzhof is therefore an enormously enjoyable wine from a famous winery, of which one should gladly keep a few bottles in the cellar: Â for later enjoyment." Egon Muller

ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Weingut Egon MĂŒller is a renowned wine estate based just outside the village of Wiltingen in the Saar valley sub-region of the Mosel in Germany. It exclusively works with the Riesling grape, and is particularly known for its wines made from the exceptional Scharzhofberg vineyard southeast of Wiltingen. The current manager is Egon MĂŒller IV, who studied his craft at the leading winemaking university at Geisenheim. The Egon MĂŒller wines are produced at a range of ripeness levels, including Kabinett, SpĂ€tlese and Auslese, with Auslese Goldkapsel (literally "gold capsule") made in the best years. If conditions allow, sweet Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein are also produced. The Scharzhofberg releases are among the most sought-after of all German wines and achieve some of Germany's highest prices at auction. Despite the trend towards drier wines in the Rheinland, the SpĂ€tlese and Auslese tend to show plenty of residual sugar. Because the wines are not dry they cannot be labeled as Grosses GewĂ€chs (a German wine title similar to Grand Cru), even though the vineyard is classified as such. All the wines need time to reach their peak and can age well. The Auslese can easily last half a century or more. A large section of 8.5 hectares (21 acres) on the grey shale slopes of the south-facing Scharzhofberg vineyard, behind the Scharzhof house and winery, forms the heart of the Egon MĂŒller estate. This is widely held to be one of the great white wine vineyards in the world. There are also half a dozen smaller plots totalling no more than four hectares (10 acres), mostly a little further down-river on the southwest-facing banks of the horseshoe bend in the Saar river between Wiltingen and Kanzem. These belong to the Weingut Le Gallais in Wiltingen which was acquired by Egon III in 1954 (though half its vineyards are rented, they are not owned outright) and include the Kupp and Braune Kupp single vineyards. Fruit from some of the other vineyards may feature in the generic Scharzhof Riesling. The estate in its present form dates back to 1797, when Jean-Jacques Koch acquired the Scharzhof farm from the French republic. His daughter married Felix MĂŒller, and the estate has remained in the same family ownership ever since.
